U.S. Network Strategy

Health care in the U.S. is complicated and the U.S. health care system is different than other countries where the government streamlines access to and payment of health care. In the U.S., medical care is very expensive for individuals, with even a simple hospital procedure possibly costing thousands of dollars.

To help ease the health care burden, U.S. Networks and Administrative Services provides access to a broad network of quality providers that comply with evidence-based guidelines for quality and local market benchmarks for cost efficiency across the U.S.

But with so many choices in U.S.-based providers, knowing where to get high-quality and affordable care can be a challenge. Members need an easy way to find providers, choose physicians (particularly specialists) and make more informed health care decisions. From finding a doctor to evaluating treatment options to understanding how to reduce health care costs, everyone could use some help.

The UnitedHealthcare U.S. network

At UnitedHealthcare Global, we are at the forefront of developing a next-generation health system, bringing more value to members by helping to:

  • Improve patient outcomes
  • Lower costs
  • Create a better experience for both patients and their health care providers

We accomplish this through a relentless focus on quality, the foundational element of a network that measures provider value. We start by identifying high-performing providers and health systems, then configure networks around them. This allows clients to then apply different ways to encourage individuals to seek care from these high-performing caregivers, such as provider selection and guided care/referrals. And with over 2.1 million physicians and health care professionals and thousands of hospitals in the U.S., you can rest easy knowing your members have access to one of the largest provider networks in the industry.

The UnitedHealth Premium® program

The UnitedHealth Premium program launched in 2005 and was one of the first in the industry to evaluate and recognize physicians for quality and cost-efficiency. The program includes 16 premium specialties representing 45 credentialed specialties available across 45 states. Within the program, physicians are evaluated in various specialties using evidence-based medicine and national standardized measures.

The Premium Care Physicians designation helps empower members to locate quality and cost-efficient providers, review their options and make more informed health care provider decisions. They simply use the provider search from U.S. Networks and Administrative Services and look for blue hearts next to the providers’ names.
