UnitedHealth International operates in Portugal with AdvanceCare, a joint venture between UnitedHealth International and Tranquilidade, a leading Portugese insurer. We formed this alliance in 1998, and provide administrative services to nine Portuguese health insurance companies and one private subsystem.
With more than 700,000 individuals served, AdvanceCare covers approximately 35 percent of the Portuguese market through nearly 6,000 active plans.
Complete management of the health insurance business:
- Benefit plans include a wide diversity of both indemnity and managed care products
- Using UnitedHealth International's RIOS® system, AdvanceCare manages more than 2,000 different benefit plans
- UnitedHealth International leverages the principles of care coordination, the basis for the AdvanceCare medical management activities, customized for the Portuguese market along with locally developed medical care guidelines
- A network of health care professionals includes over 11,000 places of service
- More than 50,000 claims per month are reviewed and processed for health services previously authorized by AdvanceCare. Electronic claims processing and Internet billing are offered.
- The customer service center receives more than 33,000 calls per month
- Data analysis and reporting is provided to the insurance companies to improve their profitability through better underwriting and benefit design
